Tasmanian firm's new Antarctic contract

For the second day straight Tasmania’s advanced manufacturing reputation has had another big win with Taylor Bros today locking in a new contract to provide heavy landing equipment for Australia’s new Antarctic icebreaker, the RSV Nuyina.

Taylor Bros, the third generation Tasmanian firm based on the shores of the Derwent River, has been selected by Dutch shipbuilding powerhouse Damen Schelde to supply two high-powered Antarctic landing barges for the Nuyina, the second biggest icebreaker ever built.

This is great news for Taylor Bros with construction of the barges extending through to 2020 when the RSV Nuyina will replace the aging Aurora Australis.

The RSV Nuyina is being built by Damen for the Australian Antarctic Division in Romania and these barges continue Tasmania’s reputation as one of the world’s most effective Antarctic manufacturing, supply and support bases.

These impressive barges being designed, engineered and built locally, by local workers, will be able to carry 45.5 tonne trucks from ship to shore on a continuous 24 hour basis delivering an unprecedented unloading and reloading capability for the new icebreaker.

This announcement continues Taylor Bros’ long Antarctic tradition having built the first jet powered landing barges for the Australian Antarctic Division in 1982 and being the primary engineering support to the Australian and overseas Antarctic ships since 1980.

This contract shows we are not only the Gateway to Antarctica because of our location, but because of our innovative advanced manufacturing capabilities and expertise in oceanic support services.

Importantly, Damen remains in the running for the contract to build the Australian Navy’s new $3 billion Offshore Patrol Vessel fleet in Adelaide with Taylor Bros well placed to continue their partnership with Damen should they be chosen.

This type of manufacturing highlights our local defence supply capabilities and the value of our local advanced manufacturing companies.

This is just another example of how Tasmanian firms are cementing our place as the Gateway to Antarctica and Australia’s emerging advanced manufacturing supplier.
